ICCA World Congress 2026 Guidelines

The ICCA World Congress is the flagship annual gathering of the international association meetings industry, convening 1,500+ senior professionals from over 80 countries and driving major economic impact, destination positioning, and sector-wide strategy. Organized by the International Congress and Convention Association, a nonprofit founded in 1963 and headquartered in Amsterdam, the Congress is the central platform for networking, education, business development, and thought leadership for convention bureaus, PCOs, venues, tourism boards, transport providers, tech suppliers, and association executives.

Originating as a General Assembly of a small travel-agents’ club in the 1960s, ICCA rebranded its annual meeting as the ICCA Congress in 1997 and opened it to non-members, evolving it into a strategic global forum; today ICCA counts 1,000+ member organisations in nearly 100 countries, led by CEO Dr. Senthil Gopinath and President Marta Gomes. The Congress is powered by ICCA’s data ecosystem, including the ICCA Association Database and the ICCA GlobeWatch: Business Analytics country and city rankings, which track more than 11,000 qualifying annual international association meetings and are among the industry’s most influential benchmarking tools.

The four-day Congress, held annually in October or November, rotates globally via competitive bids, with recent and upcoming hosts including Bangkok, Abu Dhabi, Porto, and confirmed future editions in Panama City (2026), Kigali (2027), and Muscat (2028), reinforcing ICCA’s commitment to emerging markets and regional balance. Its delegate base is dominated by destination marketing organisations and convention bureaus, followed by PCOs, venue operators, government and tourism officials, suppliers, and a fast-growing cohort of association leaders, young professionals, and students. High-level political and intergovernmental participation, including ministers and global tourism bodies, underlines the Congress’s diplomatic and economic significance.

Programme design has shifted toward immersive, multi-venue and hub-style formats, with peer-led learning, AI-supported feedback, and citywide experiences structured around themes such as sustainability, leadership, innovation, social legacy, and education. Signature elements include awards like the ICCA Best Marketing Award, the Incredible Impacts Programme, and the Moises Shuster Award, as well as the formal General Assembly and rich social programming that anchors relationship-building.

Recent editions have foregrounded carbon-neutral delivery, zero food waste, sustainable gastronomy frameworks, AI-powered event design, DEI (including neurodiversity toolkits), and youth development initiatives, positioning the ICCA World Congress as both a mirror and a catalyst for the future of global business events.
